For the Spicy Tastebuds on 53rd and 55th

When you want a meal that explores the far end of the spice rack, Hyde Park has options that you will truly enjoy.

The Jamaican flavor is alive and well along 53rd Street. Everyone has their preference on the food, and there's a winning dining experience with every stop. However, the environments and the vibe are distinctly different.

Starting at 14 Parrish closest to the Lake side of 53rd you can find the vibe especially for couples or small groups of fun diners. Ja' Grill is in Harper Court and accommodates a variety of moves for solo travelers, social drinks, slow paced lunch or a random party in the Court. But if you are looking for a fairly quick pick up, go and grub, the Jerk 53 is probably our best bet.

If your entire party cannot handle spicy but still want the option, the best compromise is LiteHouse Whole Food Grill for a wide spectrum of cuisine from Jamaican and Italian to Mexican and more customized to order.

If your taste is more for a wider check out Mahari, a stylish restaurant tucked away in the Hyde Park Shopping Center that explores the cuisines of the African Diaspora with flavorful offerings like stuffed plantains, pineapple jerk wings and a jollof platter.

Looking for a gift, souvenir, or evidence that you were here, check out Hyde Park's locally-owned businesses around Harper Court.

The Silver Room is the epitome of culture and represents all things good about the South Side. The store has a long line of products made by local artists and artisans.

From restored furniture to original works, from handmade goods to narrative-driven brands, everything inside Recycled Modern carries a sense of history, reshaped for the present moment.

Splurge a little on the good life with artisanal body products, unique jewelry, and home goods at Suuri Design, owned by a mother-daughter team.

If you or your family loves athletic and leisure wear dripping head to toe, circle the block and shop at Stockboy and Fashion Geek Clothing.

    Cocktails and award-winning neighborhood cuisine

For a pre-dinner drink, make your way back to the Sophy, where you can snag a spot at the Mesler Kitchen's lounge area. Sip on an elegant cocktail like the South Side Melody (gin, lemon juice, and pear-sage syrup) and take in the upbeat vibe at this local hot spot.

If you prefer a more casual jeans-or-better vibe, you would do well at Truth Be Told, a British gastropub where you can munch on bar snacks like tasty fried cheese curds.

If you're dressed to impress and feeling your best, make reservations for sophisticated soul food at Virtue Restaurant, the signature restaurant for James Beard Award-winning Chef Eric Williams to delight guests with a full bar, amazing short ribs, blackened catfish and so much more. Hint: don't be late for your reservation time.

Make Room for Arts and Culture with Lunch, Cocktails or Dinner

After lunch or a sweet treat from Kilwins or Garrett's Popcorn, you could walk it off a few blocks to catch a vibe. Don't miss the beat in the bins filled with jazz, blues, soul, and house albums at Hyde Park Records, known for its extensive collection of new and used for music lovers, collectors, enthusiasts, and artists alike.

If you're looking for an easy couples cultural adventure, consider buying tickets to a play at the Court Theatre. If you find a show you'd like to see, then you might be able to squeeze in a visit the Smart Museum before the show. And depending on your when you'd like to eat, there are nice options for lunch, cocktails and/or dinner within just a few blocks.

Looking for something other than a play but still culturally filling, look for events at the Logan Center for the Arts, a vibrant community space that hosts dance performances, live music, visual arts exhibitions, and more.
